The West Coast

Part of the Black River district, the west coast of Mauritius has a unique environment and setting. The driest region of the island, its sunny and wild landscape is speckled with natural wonders.

Tamarina Golf Estate is set in the golden savannah land of Tamarin, dominated by the soaring rocky peak of Rempart Mountain. An old fishermen’s village, Tamarin has developed into a lively picturesque coastal village with many facilities and shops. It is also the main salt pan area of Mauritius where you can see the traditional production of salt. Tamarina overlooks Tamarin Bay, the most popular surfing destination of the island.

Not far from Tamarin, the Black River Gorges is home to a large portion of Mauritius’ unique tropical forests. Famous areas and attractions in the region include Tamarind Falls and the seven-coloured earths of Chamarel. The rolling dunes of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow coloured earth provide a fascinating lunar-like landscape that has amazed many geologists.

A short distance away from Tamarina Estate, the Casela Nature Park is a must for a recreational family trip. The park hosts over a thousand birds of 150 different species, a variety of animals from tigers, lemurs, ostriches, giant tortoises to a pride of young lions, and a small petting farm where children can feed animals.

The Flic en Flac village is a popular tourist destination with one of the longest beach on the island and turquoise lagoon. Its beach is fringed with Casuarina trees or “filaos” which provide delightful shade. Flic en Flac also offers a myriad of dining opportunities and diverse choice of cuisine.

Further south is a top kite-surfing and wind-surfing destination: Le Morne. The imposing Le Morne Mountain is historically famous as a hideaway for runaway slaves during colonial times, where slaves were known to jump off the top rather than being caught.

As the sun sets on the west coast, the landscape becomes a glowing red, orange and golden masterpiece.
